I've been busy painting new work for my upcoming exhibition at Grafica Contemporary Fine Art (opening reception on October 26, 2018 from 5 to 8 pm). I've posted a few of my newest paintings on my website but from now until the opening reception I won't be adding any new work to my website. I want it to be a surprise. You're invited to Sky's the Limit 2: Saint Louis' Premier Exhibition of the Boundless Landscape at OA Gallery in Kirkwood. Gorgeous landscape artwork done in a variety of mediums by dozens of talented artists. On display and available for sale during the month of August. My painting "Reflection in a Stream"  (above) will be in the show along with two other new paintings. Opening Reception August 3, 2018 6:00pm - 9:00pm Easiest way to hang a gallery wall A gallery wall can be a stunning design centerpiece in a living room, bedroom, staircase or hallway. With these simple steps, create a masterpiece look with any combination of framed photos, artwork, heirlooms and other hanging décor. Gather your gallery pieces and needed supplies. A gallery wall can look orderly with consistent photos (such as all black and white) or frame styles (such as all wood or metallic), or it can take on a collected look with a variety of colorful photos, artwork, frame styles and three-dimensional décor. Just make sure each piece is ready to hang with a proper hanger or hook. Supplies: Variety of gallery wall pieces Roll of paper Tape Nails or screws and anchors Hammer Toothpaste Pencil Trace and cut out all gallery pieces on paper to create templates. Simple wrapping paper will all do the trick. Mark the nail placement on each paper template by laying it over the backside of the frame or artwork and tracing the hanger’s edge. Mark this nail spot with an X. Once your template arrangement is final and taped on the wall exactly where they will hang, hammer a nail through each template’s marked X. Tear away the paper template and the nail is ready in perfect position to hang each gallery piece. It's been a busy winter and I did a lot of painting. Here are three of a recently completed series of landscapes called Far Hills 1, 2, & 3, all oil on canvas. Painted with a palette knife, the location they depict is slightly more fantasy than reality. I also had an incredible sale through my gallery, Grafica Contemporary Fine Art in Webster Groves. Their client, an architecture firm, redesigned an entire floor at the St. Louis Club in Clayton. The client bought eight of my current available paintings and commissioned a ninth piece to be painted to a custom size (30x48 inches). Wow is all I can say. One sale is exciting enough...this one is thrilling. They are all located in one of the banquet rooms, the Louisiana Room, shown below. How to Warm Up a Commission The square painting (below) was the inspiration for the St. Louis Club commission I recently completed. The client loved the original 30x30 painting, and in fact bought it, but wished to have a bigger piece to make statement in the space. The commission shown above: Cloudscape #9, (30x48, oil on canvas) was painted with a slightly warmer tone overall, one that made the clouds look at little less ominous. If you look at the two paintings, the difference in tone may be subtle but its definitely there. I used a wide range of grays for both paintings. My favorite mix for gray is Burnt Sienna and French Ultramarine. More blue than brown in the mix will yield a cooler gray and more brown than blue will give me a warmer gray. The additional difference in the commission was adding Naples Yellow which really warmed up the final painting. Tips on How to Properly Hang Artwork Height Matters One of the frequent mistakes people make is hanging artwork too high. Here are some tips on how to get it right. On a blank wall with no furnishings against it, the middle of the art should be 66 to 72 inches from the floor. Got really high ceilings? Adjust to the high end of the range: position the middle of the art at 72 inches from the floor. Low ceilings? Go for the lower end of the range at 66 inches - the lower you hang art, the higher your ceilings will appear. When hanging art above a piece of furniture (headboard, sofa or credenza), the bottom of the art should be eight to 12 inches higher than the top of the furniture. Too large of a gap makes the art look like it's floating away and disconnected from the furnishings below. Over a fireplace, hang the artwork four to six inches from the top of the mantle. Remember, don't get tricked into thinking you have to hang your artwork half way up the wall no matter the ceiling height - hang it in relation to the furniture below it. Making Arrangements The size of artworks and of groupings is just as important as the height at which the pieces are installed. Hanging a tiny piece of art above a large sofa will make the artwork look insignificant and puny. Try to fill about two-thirds of the width of the furniture. For instance, if you have a seven-foot-long sofa, the artwork above it should consume about a four-foot length of wall space above it. A queen-size bed is five-feet wide, so hang artwork above it that's  three-feet wide. Long empty walls, as in a hallway, are perfect for creating gallery-style art walls filled with coordinated work - they could be united by subject, medium, frame or size. Always follow the 66-inch rule (from the middle of the artwork to the floor) rather than lining up all the bottom edges of the frames. When installing a collage or large group of works on one wall, hang the largest piece in the middle, and work your way out-word with pieces gradually decreasing in size with the smallest on the ends of the arrangement. Argonne, Kirkwood, MO Hours: Wed- Sat, 12-5 What style of frame works for you? I love plein air style frames because they work well with paintings on panel. Oil paintings do not require a mat or glass so the wide face of these frames work great with these paintings. There are many traditional plein air styles available in may different finishes and colors. Contemporary plein air style frames (like the Taos Grey, upper right) are also a possibility if that works better for your personal style. (Clockwise from upper left: Walking Through Shadows, Little Stream, Beach Combing, Woodland Stream, all 6x6.) To frame or not to frame...it depends on what you like! I like large paintings (the over-the-sofa size) to be gallery wrapped canvas (sides painted) without a frame. It showcases the work and is clean and contemporary. Small pieces (like a piece above a small table) need a frame to stand out.  Artwork to Fit Your Space Imagine finding the exact painting that you love BUT it's just the wrong size. What to do? Look at this installation of three paintings in the hallway at the SLU Hospital Radiology & Oncology Building (L-R, Water & Grasses, Little Stream, Field & Stream). They are generously sized at 36x36 inches on gallery wrapped canvas in floating walnut frames. The surprise is the original paintings are only 6x6 inches! These gorgeous  reproductions by Grafica Contemporary Fine Art fit this space beautifully! A Wedding Memory & Commission A friend and loyal art collector contacted me recently to paint a special memory for him and his new wife. He wanted a painting from their favorite park, Tower Grove, in Saint Louis. The image I decided on painting combined the distinctive Turkish Pavilion peaking through the trees with a nearby pond filled with water lilies. (Tower Grove Pavilion, oil, 16x12)

Hot ART at the Glass Factory! View this email in your browser

Multiple Choice. Join me along with my favorite group of artists, Art Group 360 at Third Degree Glass in downtown St. Louis. We'll be showing the artwork from our show, Multiple Choice. This exhibit features each artist’s unique theme in a grouping of small works done in a square format.   Opening night is August 19th from 6-10 pm. There will be tons of fun stuff to do and see at Third Degree Glass during Third Friday, this August 19th from 6-10 pm. If you've never been to the factory you are in for a treat.
