This painting is of a favorite tree of mine in Forest Park, St. Louis, MO.

Plein Air painting

Here is a painting from day two of the workshop I took with Billyo. We painted all day at Blanchette Landing along the Missouri river. This is from the morning session. It was windy and cold that morning. We all found places to stand out of the wind.

Workshop with Billyo

I attended a three day workshop for plein air painters in late October. It was chilly! We all earned our plein air stripes! Billyo  was a wonderful teacher. I heartily recommend his workshops if you have the chance to join up. Here is Billyo starting a demonstration for the class along the Katy Trail in Saint Charles, MO.

October is National Arts & Humanities month in the U.S.

Every day we celebrate the arts, but October is the month to commemorate the arts in a big way. It is National Arts and Humanities Month—the largest annual celebration for the arts and humanities in the nation!
National Arts and Humanities Month (NAHM) is a coast-to-coast collective recognition of the importance of culture in America. It is designed to encourage all Americans to explore new facets of the arts and humanities in their lives, and to begin a lifelong habit of active participation in the arts and humanities.
From hosting a Creative Conversation or arts center open house to securing a mayoral proclamation or better newspaper coverage of the arts, people in every community across the United States can celebrate NAHM by helping recognize the contributions of cultural organizations in their region.
Want to join in the celebration? Great! What would you like to do? Go to the NAHM website and sign up! http://www.americansforthearts.org/get_involved/advocacy/nahm

Looking at Landscapes: art fair weekend at the Gateway Gallery

The art fair weekend at the Gateway was a great success. Lots of folks came in over the three day event to browse the art in our gallery. It was a busy and exhausting three days! This photo is of folks looking at my wall at the Gateway. The horse "looking" on is a ceramic sculpture by Karen Antrim. Thanks to everyone who came by to say hi.

New landscape painting: searching for a title

This new painting is close to finished but needs a title. I need to lighten the trunk of the foreground tree and a few other tweaks, but it is close to finished.

Winter Sky: new landscape in oil

This new painting: Winter Sky, oil, 24x48, is the newest in my Colorado series. This is near Shadow Mountain Lake which is just outside of Grand Lake. I chose this title because this painting captures the sky was bringing the weather our way! It did snow the next day.

Peacefull Clearing: Landscape in oil

Peaceful Clearing, 24x36, oil.
This painting is another in my series of favorite places to drive in Colorado. This aspen view was near Shadow Mountain Lake which is in the Grand Lake area just outside of Rocky Mountain National Park. So many of the people who visit my studio in the Foundry recognize the subject matter of this series because they've been to Colorado. It's fun to talk about favorite places, towns, etc.

Photo of my recent show at MAD Art Gallery

Here is a photo of my display at MAD Art Gallery during City Wide Open Studios in St. Louis this past Saturday. We had great crowds all day.

Shadow Road, new landscape in oil

Shadow Road, oil on canvas, 30x40 inches.

Another in my series of favorite places to drive in Colorado, this is an unimproved road along Ohio pass. which winds through high country ranches and beautiful scenery.

Landscape in oil: Maroon Wilderness

I am continuing to paint my favorite areas along Colorado's most scenic roads. This is the Maroon Wilderness area outside of Aspen. It is on the way to Maroon Bells, one of Colorado's most iconic mountain peaks. Maroon Wilderness is oil on canvas, 30x30.

Landscape in oil: A View Across the Seine

A View Across the Seine, oil, 36x24 is a view of apartments in Paris along the Seine. These trees were still mostly green in mid-October but I chose to paint them in fall hues. I like the warm color of the trees contrasting with the cooler tones of the apartment buildings.

Autumn at Julie's House

Autumn at Julie's House, oil, 18x12 is painted on gallery wrapped canvas. Julie's house is an old schoolhouse in Berger, MO belonging to my friend and painter, Julie Wiegand and her husband. Their property is wonderful with criss-crossing paths cut into the tall grasses. It's a wonderful place to paint.

New Painting

Hillside Aspen, oil on canvs, 24x24

Another favorite drive in Colorado, over McClure Pass. These aspen really are this color.

More New Work

Aspen Shade, oil on canvas, 24x24

Another favorite drive up Pouder Canyon in Colorado. A sunny meadow surrounded by aspen in full fall glory.

New Work

Meandering Through Willows,
oil on canvas, 30x30

While on a wonderful drive over Independence Pass in Colorado on the way home from Aspen, I found this summer stream winding its' way through the high meadow.

New Painting

Seaside Palms, oil on panel, 16x12
After spending the month of February in Florida I was inspired to paint this view of Siesta Key which has the whitest sand imaginable.

New Work

Distant Icon, oil on canvas, 36 x 24
The Chase Park Plaze seen from
Forest Park, St. Louis, MO

Rocky Edge

This new painting, Rocky Edge is 16 x 12" on canvas panel. I used a limited palette of browns and cool blues, creating my own local color.

Completed: Through the Shadows

This is the completed canvas:
Through the Shadows, 24 x 24, oil on deep stretched canvas. Forest Park is my favorite urban park in St. Louis.

Forest Park Painting

This is my new Forest Park painting in progress (24x24 on deep stretched canvas). Needs some work to integrate the foreground with the background.

A New Underpainting

I sketched this drawing in charcoal on a new canvas and after fixing the sketch so it wouldn't run, I added a warm underpainting. This is a Forest Park in St. Louis.

Mountain Trail

Mountain Trail (12x10, oil on panel) is a scene near Telluride, CO from a summer trip I took a few years ago. I usually don't paint aspen in summer green but I really liked this shot.

Path to Sunlight (my favorite park in Colorado)

Path to Sunlight (14x11, oil on panel) is a scene from a favorite city park of mine: Washington Park in Denver, CO. It's a shot of trees, a path along the canal that winds through the park and a small lake in the background. I finished this in mid-December. It was cold and wintery in Missouri and I wanted to time travel back to a warm fall day and a favorite walk in Wash Park.

Final for Julie's Path

This the final shot of my new painting "Julie's Path" (20x16, oil on canvas). I painted this from a photo I shot at Julie Weigand's home where I took a workshop given by her in October. It was one of those last really warm days, although it started out quite cold. I remember how cold my feet were early in the morning after walking through the damp grass before Julie set up for a demo.
For this painting, I opened up the trees along the ridge because I wanted to show the sky coming through the trees.

Third stage of new work

This is a shot of my new painting; the shot is not great - its from my phone so the color is off but I've made good progeress and its close to finished. I'll shoot the last one with my Canon DSL.

Second stage of new work

This is stage two of my new piece. I have worked all over the painting, keeping in a warm mode.

New work in progress: underpainting

This is an underpainting for a new oil painting on canvas. I wanted to make it very warm so that that feeling would carry through to the final piece.

BTW Happy New Year everyone!
